The primary image displayed on the historic coat of arms of the House of Visconti, the Serpent of Visconti. The large serpent is shown rising up in the act of swallowing a child. The Visconti line began their rise to power in Milan during the 11th century, and continued into the Middle Ages, until 1447. The design is accented by decorative elements that includes a wreath of olive leaves encircling the rim.
