2022 Cook Islands ENLIGHTENMENT Threads of Light 24k Gold Note (Aurum)
The period after Rome's fall is oft remembered as a dark age for European history. To capture this period the setting is nighttime, but that is not to say that there are no luminaries at work. In other parts of the world the threads of light thrived and Enlightenment persisted.
Obverse Side: Featured here is the image of Ibn Yunus (c. 950 - 1009) who was an Egyptian astronomer, mathematician, and poet and whose ideas often proved far ahead of their time, in spite of his idiosyncratic reputation. Among his contributions was the astrolabe, an instrument for stellar measurement used in Egypt since Hellenistic times but improved upon during the Islamic Golden Age by Ibn Yunus. The 10th-century astronomer adapted the astrolabe to further calculate positions of the sun to determine eclipses.
